ThrottleStop TPL Settings Guide
TPL controls describe how a supported Intel processor is allowed to use power over time. Raising a limit can increase heat without improving performance when cooling, current or firmware remains the real constraint.
PL1 and Sustained Power
PL1 generally represents a longer-duration package power target. Laptop manufacturers tune it around the cooling system, adapter and chassis. Increasing it without thermal capacity can create more throttling.
PL2 and Short Turbo
PL2 permits a higher short boost on supported systems. The processor may return toward the sustained limit after the configured time or when another electrical or thermal limit is reached.
Clamp, MMIO and Locks
These controls interact with firmware and platform registers. A value shown in ThrottleStop may be rewritten by BIOS or embedded-controller logic. Do not lock settings until their effect is understood.
Measure the Result
Compare clock, package power, temperature and performance under the same repeatable workload. More watts are not automatically better if the CPU immediately reaches a thermal limit.
